Our Shaz has been given a Northumberland Local Heroes accolade from Northumberland County Council. For services to the community and for our fund-raising for Macmillan Cancer Support which started when we took part in the charity’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning initiative.
Sharon and the team also organised the event to support one of the regulars, Peter Almond, who was terminally ill. He later died and the third Macmillan coffee morning at the pub, which took place last year, was in his memory.
About £20,000 has been raised over the three years. We also held a party fund-raiser last year in aid of the charity to celebrate the return of Team TerraClean of Cramlington, which won the Two Ball Banger Rally that involves travelling across nine countries in four days in a cheap car.
This year’s rally is now under way and the event to welcome the same team home at The Keel Row is a music festival on August 30 (6pm start).
Sharon also organises a bus to drive elderly care home residents to and from the pub free-of-charge and operates a food bank that distributes items donated by local people.
Sharon said: “The response to our events has been amazing, so many people have baked a cake and made a donation. We don’t do these activities to get awards, so I can’t believe we have won three within the past 12 months. I’m also really touched to be recognised by the county council.”
Sharon received her award from Coun. Liz Simpson, deputy business chair at Northumberland County Council.
Food bank - The Keel Row collects food for our local food bank to help those families struggling financially and are unable to feed their families - You can drop food off to us and put it into food bank box … Thank you
Charity Music Festival July 2015 - A fantastic event in which we raised money and awareness for mental health charity ‘Blue Star Enterprises’ - £3,000 was raised for this worthwhile charity.
Our Christmas Community Carol Service - In December 2015, we planned and hosted a Christmas community carol service for all the families in our local community. The team at The Keel Row had a fantastic idea to hire real life reindeer to accompany Santa Clause to our event – our idea was for each child at the event to be given a selection box (free of charge, of course!). Our regulars really pulled out all the stops to fundraise the £500 fee for the reindeer and raised a massive £600 for selection boxes for the children - a big thank you to them all! As well as the reindeer and Santa Clause, we arranged for our local church vicar to deliver the outdoor carol service. The service had a mixture of Christmas carols and the vicar delivered a service by candlelight. We were so overwhelmed at the amount of families that turned up to this free event, we had in excess of 600 people here, people of all ages and all walks of life – a true community! We can’t wait for this year’s event!
We are proud to announce that we are winners of the community hero pub awards for the North East region. We won this award for our charity work and community spirit within the local area; so far we have raised over £10,000 for MacMillan Cancer Support.
